Richard Childress Racing Partners With Nimbix and Ansys To Improve the Aerodynamic Performance for Its Legendary Nascar Race Cars

Richard Childress Racing, a longtime NASCAR organization, needed a way to run highly accurate computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations for aerodynamic design without relying on slow, expensive wind tunnel testing. Working with Nimbix and ANSYS, the team used HPC resources through the Nimbix Cloud and JARVICE to support ANSYS Fluent simulation workloads and overcome delays from outsourced compute.

With Nimbix, Richard Childress Racing was able to run CFD simulations in-house with much higher mesh counts, including over 615 million points, and scale to typical 400-core jobs with tests at 400, 600, and 800 cores. The result was a dramatic reduction in turnaround time from days to hours, improved confidence in simulation accuracy, less dependence on wind tunnel testing, and faster development of more aerodynamic race cars.
