Calgary Public Library keeps credentials & secrets safe with Nightfall

Calgary Public Library, a 21-branch public library serving over 700,000 members and 6 million annual visitors, faced a critical security challenge when migrating code from an on-premises Subversion server to GitHub: preventing secrets such as passwords and API keys from being committed to repositories. To address this data exposure risk, the library adopted Nightfall Radar for GitHub as their data loss prevention (DLP) solution.

Nightfall implemented Radar’s point-and-click dashboard and REST API to automatically scan GitHub repos for hundreds of types of credentials, using deep learning–based detectors to reduce false positives. The result: faster, easier enforcement of secret-detection across projects, a measurable increase in developer productivity and confidence, and "many hours" of development time saved as Calgary Public Library no longer needs custom linters to prevent secret leaks. Nightfall’s fast implementation and accurate scanning let the IT team focus on building services instead of policing code.
