A NHS Employers Case Study
Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust (WWL) wanted to improve sustainable staff engagement after its 2011 staff survey showed only 21% of measures above the national average. Working with NHS Employers, the trust explored a combination of engagement approaches to build a more consistent, data-driven culture across its services.
NHS Employers supported WWL in creating “The WWL Way,” which combined elements of Staff Involvement Delivers, Listening into Action, and The Unipart Way, alongside a diagnostic tool and 26-week Pioneer training programme. The approach helped the trust strengthen staff survey performance, with above-average scores rising 64% from 2011 and a further 15% in 2013, while sickness absence fell from 4.62% to 4.17% and temporary staffing spend dropped from £15 million to £12 million.
