A NHS Employers Case Study
Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, with support from vendor NHS Employers, faced the challenge of helping staff carers stay in work and access support. Although the trust had a work-life balance policy, many employees were unaware of it or unsure how to use it, and some carers were struggling with their responsibilities outside work.
NHS Employers supported the trust in setting up the “colleagues as carers” forum, meeting monthly across both hospital sites during work time and backed by local carer support workers and guest speakers. The initiative raised awareness of flexible working, special leave and other resources, reached over 500 people through a conference session, and now has regular attendance, stronger signposting to local services, and better support for carers across the trust.
