A NHS Employers Case Study
West Suffolk Occupational Health Service, part of West Suffolk Hospital, needed to keep increasing flu vaccination uptake among its 2,500 permanent staff and 1,000 bank staff. Working with NHS Employers’ flu campaign guidance and promotional materials, the team faced the challenge of maintaining momentum year after year and reaching staff across the hospital at convenient times.
NHS Employers’ approach focused on a well-planned, highly visible vaccination campaign: open access sessions, ward and department visits, senior leaders being vaccinated publicly, and repeated communication through intranet, newsletters, emails, posters and staff training events. The results improved steadily over time, with staff uptake rising from 10% in 2000 to 26% in 2005 and 44% in 2010, while targeted mobile vaccination and on-site coverage helped make the service more accessible and efficient.
