University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust - Customer Case Study

University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust worked with NHS Employers to refresh its reward approach as recruitment pressures grew and staff engagement needed a boost. The trust wanted to move away from a focus on length of service and better reflect performance, motivation, and its total reward offering through a new three-year reward and recognition strategy.

NHS Employers supported the trust in developing and rolling out “Reward and Recognise to Recruit, Motivate and Retain” (2013–2016), built from staff listening events and organized around six pillars covering pay, benefits, learning, career progression, working environment, and employer branding. The strategy was backed by annual action plans, regular progress reviews, and RAG-rated milestones, with success measured through turnover and staff survey/pulse check results; early pulse checks showed a big leap in staff satisfaction.
