A NHS Employers Case Study
The Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust worked with NHS Employers to tackle a staff wellbeing challenge, most notably a sickness absence rate of over seven per cent. As the UK’s only specialist neurosciences trust, the organisation needed a more coordinated approach to staff health and wellbeing to support safe staffing and broader workforce stability.
NHS Employers supported the trust in developing and embedding a health and wellbeing strategy with strong trade union involvement, staff engagement, and a branded programme of initiatives such as exercise classes, massage therapy, fast-track physiotherapy, mental health first aid training and lunchtime talks. The results were significant: sickness absence fell and was sustained at around four per cent over three years, staff survey scores improved for job satisfaction and engagement, and the trust achieved Investors in People Gold and a Health and Wellbeing IIP Award.
