A NHS Employers Case Study
The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust worked with NHS Employers to improve its end-of-life care services after patient and family feedback, along with a Care Quality Commission report, highlighted gaps in care, education and training. The trust needed a better way to support patients in their final days while ensuring staff had the confidence and knowledge to deliver consistent, compassionate care.
NHS Employers supported the trust in introducing an end-of-life care plan, drop-in staff training, the swan scheme, and a profile-raising conference. The programme improved staff skills and cross-team working, encouraged earlier conversations about end-of-life wishes, and generated 1,500 trained clinical staff, 170 conference attendees, 30 follow-up training queries, and funding for further education and a 2016 conference.
