A NHS Employers Case Study
The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust sought to formalize and enhance its support for employees who are members of the UK Reserve Forces. The trust, with support from NHS Employers, aimed to create a structured policy environment that recognized the mutual benefits of reservist service, ensuring that skills gained through military training could be effectively applied within the NHS to improve patient care.
NHS Employers supported the trust in implementing specific policies and practices, including a dedicated training and mobilisation policy and a system to record reservist status on electronic staff records. This structured support allowed reservists to fully participate in military duties, leading to the successful application of military-gained trauma skills within the trust's emergency services. As a result, the trust launched the innovative 'Blood on Board' air ambulance campaign and was awarded the Employer Recognition Scheme Bronze Award by the UK Ministry of Defence in 2015 for its commitment.
