A NHS Employers Case Study
Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust, a provider of mental health and learning disabilities services, needed to standardize the training and career pathway for its healthcare assistants (HCAs). This challenge arose from a recent merger that left HCAs on inconsistent pay bands and job descriptions, a lack of uniform training, and the need to prepare for pending national reviews. The trust partnered with NHS Employers to develop a new, comprehensive learning framework to address these issues and improve the quality of care.
NHS Employers helped the trust implement a blended learning framework that included a four-week induction, 30 weeks of work-based training, e-learning, competency sign-offs, and an NVQ Diploma. The solution led to a highly engaged workforce, with 770 out of 999 existing HCAs opting into the program. The results showed a significant return on investment, with learners reporting the acquisition of new skills, greater confidence, and a direct positive impact on patient care, as well as creating a standardized and more competent workforce for the trust.
