South Staffordshire and Shropshire Healthcare - Customer Case Study

South Staffordshire and Shropshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust worked with NHS Employers to improve frontline staff flu vaccination uptake, which had been very low at 10%. Faced with the need to protect patients and staff and reduce absence during a potential pandemic flu threat, the trust needed a more effective, easy-to-access vaccination programme.

NHS Employers supported the trust with a flexible flu vaccination campaign that included dedicated senior leadership time, daily clinic monitoring, trained nurse vaccinators, drop-in and early-morning clinics, ward visits, and strong communications. The result was a major increase in uptake, with frontline staff vaccination rates rising from 10% to 52% in 2010/11, alongside the creation of ongoing training and expanded vaccinator capacity.
