A NHS Employers Case Study
South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust worked with **NHS Employers** to improve staff health and wellbeing across a large, complex mental health service. The trust faced rising workloads, growing stress, poor support systems and equipment issues, and lower morale as staff struggled to balance demanding work with a strong desire to deliver excellent patient care.
**NHS Employers** supported the trust’s “happier@work” wellbeing programme through staff feedback, stakeholder planning, cross-team collaboration, wellbeing assessments, job shadowing and a range of interventions such as mindfulness training, smoke-free initiatives and recovery/awareness courses. The programme reached 851 staff over three years, with participants reporting better confidence, stress management and team support; absence fell from 6.79% to 5.19%, and early evaluation by London Southbank University showed improved wellbeing indicators and reduced signs of mental ill health.
