Skills for Health Academy North West worked with NHS Employers to tackle unemployment and limited social mobility in deprived parts of the North West, where many adults lacked the skills, experience and confidence to move into healthcare roles. Their challenge was to create effective pre-employment routes that would help disadvantaged local people overcome barriers to work and progression.

NHS Employers supported Skills for Health Academy North West’s pre-employment programmes in partnership with Jobcentre Plus, training providers and local health organisations. The offer included a 20-hour health and employment programme and a 14-week programme combining college study, work-based training, DBS and occupational health checks, and post-programme support. The results were strong: in 2011/12, over 72% completed the programme, 70% secured employment, and 252 job outcomes generated an estimated £2,633,652 in local economic impact.
