A NHS Employers Case Study
Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust worked with NHS Employers to address a lack of strategic focus on staff health and wellbeing. Although the trust had already run some wellbeing initiatives, it needed a clearer strategy that linked employee health to patient care, improved morale and engagement, and supported its wider vision of delivering an outstanding patient experience.
NHS Employers helped Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust build an executive-sponsored health and wellbeing strategy, supported by a strategic group, action group, and health and wellbeing champions. The trust introduced initiatives such as staff counselling, mental health support, psychological wellbeing courses, and expanded physiotherapy services, all under the ShapeUp@Salisbury brand. Results included sickness absence at 3.35% in 2014, improved staff survey scores, better support ratings for pressure and work-related stress, and a reduction in stress/anxiety/depression absence from 14.49% in November 2014 to 9.8% in March 2015.
