A NHS Employers Case Study
Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, an NHS organization, partnered with the vendor NHS Employers to enhance its end-of-life care training. The challenge was to empower its large, multidisciplinary workforce with the skills and confidence to deliver high-quality care, ensuring it was seen as "everyone's business" and not just the responsibility of specialist teams.
NHS Employers supported the trust in implementing a solution centered on personalized coaching, role modeling, and a variety of workshops like enhanced communication skills and the Six Steps programme. This approach, which included initiatives like the 'swan scheme', was highly effective in engaging staff. The results were outstanding, including an 'outstanding' rating from the Care Quality Commission for end-of-life care. Measurable impacts from family surveys showed that over 86% of bereaved families felt involved in decisions and that their family member was well looked upon in their final days.
