A NHS Employers Case Study
Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust worked with NHS Employers to address the challenge of preparing internationally recruited nurses from the Philippines for the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s OSCE exam. Like many acute trusts, RBCH needed a better way to support overseas nurses through the UK registration process while improving recruitment, retention, and readiness for practice.
NHS Employers supported a structured OSCE preparation programme built around weekly teaching sessions, a custom workbook, clinical skills practice, and a mock OSCE before the test date. An RBCH educator attended a train-the-trainer course and then developed the programme, which was delivered by the trust’s clinical education team. The approach was well received, with feedback showing candidates felt prepared, supported, and engaged, and the trust reported that the process helped improve confidence and future pass rates, though no specific numerical results were provided.
