Raising the profile of healthcare science careers

Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) NHS Foundation Trust, one of the world’s leading children’s hospitals, wanted to raise the profile of healthcare science careers and give young people better access to information, work experience, and outreach opportunities. Working with NHS Employers, the hospital supported staff-led career education and outreach activity to help students understand the breadth of healthcare science roles and make more informed future career choices.

NHS Employers supported GOSH’s use of outreach resources and best-practice guidance to deliver programmes such as Reach Out for Healthcare Science, Healthcare Science Week, Science4U, and a public open day. The impact was strong: 300 students took part in the work-experience programme and 12% more said they would aim to become a healthcare scientist afterwards, while larger events attracted over 300 secondary students and more than 150 attendees respectively, with consistently positive feedback and increased awareness of healthcare science careers.
