Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust worked to improve staff training so it could better meet patient needs, support safe and compassionate care, and reduce the strain of traditional, resource-intensive training methods. The trust partnered with **NHS Employers** and used the **Learning4Health South West** e-learning platform to help close skills gaps across its workforce.

**NHS Employers** helped the trust expand flexible e-learning and targeted training for clinical and support staff, including immunisation, safer sampling, and apprenticeship pathways. The results included better training uptake, a **16% increase in flu vaccination uptake**, training for **204 HCAs** in 2013, the creation of new support roles such as Doctors’ Assistants, and a reduction in sickness absence from **8.9% to 2.6%** between 2013 and 2014.
