Case Study: Barts Health NHS Trust improves diversity and inclusion for BME staff with NHS Employers

Our journey to become more diverse and inclusive

Barts Health NHS Trust, one of the UK’s largest NHS trusts, wanted to improve staff experience and address the under-representation of BME and female staff in senior roles. To support this equality and inclusion challenge, the trust worked with NHS Employers on a staff development initiative and a film capturing BME staff experiences, alongside workshops for career development.

NHS Employers supported the Barts Health NHS Trust BME staff development steering group in producing the film and related guidance for managers and staff. The programme has helped over 150 staff take part in development workshops, with 20 progressing to higher-band roles, and the film has been adopted for manager training, won the Barts Health Hero Award 2015, and been shortlisted for a Nursing Times Award.
