Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust - Customer Case Study

Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust, one of the UK’s largest mental health trusts with over 6,000 staff across 60 sites, needed to improve flu vaccination uptake and better engage staff with campaign messaging. Working with NHS Employers and its Flu Fighter campaign resources, the trust set out to tackle low uptake, myths about the vaccine, and the challenge of reaching a large, dispersed workforce.

NHS Employers helped support a solution built around a balanced flu team, a strong peer vaccinator network, and creative communications such as animated myth-busting characters, screen savers, social media, and a flu intranet page. The trust also introduced a paperless self-consent form and a tracking system to identify low-uptake areas. As a result, peer vaccinators increased to 150 and flu uptake rose to 63.6%, up from 14.3% in 2010/11, with the campaign also gaining wider attention through local radio coverage.
