Making every contact count to improve staff wellbeing

Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust worked with NHS Employers to roll out a Making Every Contact Count (MECC) programme across a large, geographically dispersed workforce of 6,800 staff. The trust’s challenge was to make health conversations part of everyday practice for both clinical and non-clinical employees, while ensuring staff understood how MECC applied to their roles.

NHS Employers supported an organisation-wide solution built around MECC level one e-learning, face-to-face training, reporting systems, and a strong communications campaign, followed by the development of specialist level two e-learning modules. By July 2016, 56% of staff had completed level one training, and evaluation reported improved knowledge, greater confidence in delivering health chats, and increased awareness of personal health behaviours, with some staff committing to positive changes such as being more active and eating more healthily.
