A NHS Employers Case Study
Livewell Southwest, an independent social enterprise providing integrated health and social care services in Plymouth, South Hams and West Devon, wanted to help local people into employment while also filling vacancies in the organisation. The challenge was to create an accessible route into work for people who had been unemployed for a long time or faced barriers such as learning disabilities, mental health issues, or ex-offender status.
NHS Employers supported Livewell Southwest in setting up a paid work placement model, coordinated by a placement and inclusion manager, with roles ring-fenced in bands one to three and offered through partner organisations like Jobcentre Plus and Remploy. The scheme provided a four-week paid trial followed by a six-month paid placement, and has generated over 300 applications, converted 30 vacancies into placements, sustained 21 ongoing placements, and led to four permanent jobs.
