Liverpool Community Health NHS Trust, a customer of NHS Employers, faced the challenge of increasing staff engagement and vaccination uptake for its annual flu campaign. The trust needed a strategy to effectively communicate the importance of the vaccination to all staff members and target hard-to-reach groups.
NHS Employers supported the trust in implementing a solution that involved strong board-level leadership and a humorous 1950s-themed campaign. The solution included having board members vaccinated first and serve as immunizers, creating spoof posters featuring staff, appointing flu champions, and offering flexible drop-in sessions. As a result of the efforts by NHS Employers and the trust, staff engagement and board visibility significantly increased, culminating in a successful 69.8 per cent vaccination uptake rate.
