Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust - Customer Case Study

Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT) partnered with vendor NHS Employers to enhance its business administration apprenticeship programme. The challenge was that young apprentices, a majority of whom were aged 16-24, required more tailored support. Initial mentoring from senior line managers was insufficient, as they were often unavailable, leaving both apprentices and managers without adequate guidance.

NHS Employers' solution was a two-tiered mentoring system. This included peer mentors in band 2 roles for job-shadowing and a dedicated learning mentor for pastoral and developmental support. The results were highly positive: managers now actively request apprentices for their teams, band 2 staff gained development opportunities, and issues were resolved promptly instead of at the end of the programme. The trust successfully prepared 33 apprentices for band 2 positions in 2016.
