Leadership programme for SAS doctors and consultants

Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust worked with NHS Employers to address a leadership and development challenge among its senior doctors. New consultants and SAS doctors were finding it stressful to adjust to senior roles in a new trust, while leaders wanted a more engaging, participative leadership style and equal development opportunities for SAS doctors.

NHS Employers supported the trust in launching a mandatory leadership and development programme for new consultants and SAS doctors, covering trust values, performance, speaking up, finance, HR, patient care, leadership, and change management, plus mentoring and reflective support. The result was improved leadership and management skills, stronger cross-disciplinary working, better job satisfaction and productivity, and positive effects on service improvement and patient care, with the added benefit of identifying future senior leaders.
