A NHS Employers Case Study
Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust partnered with NHS Employers to address the challenge of recruiting and developing apprentices for both health and social care roles across a large, rural area. The trust wanted a way to build a workforce with transferable skills and a better understanding of different care settings, while supporting people into careers in either sector.
NHS Employers supported an integrated health and social care apprenticeship pilot, developed with local partners and City College Norwich, using a Level 2 Health and Social Care framework plus additional units such as end-of-life care and dementia. The programme included a clinical induction, placements in community care and on a hospital ward, mentoring, and regular visits; it was judged a success with only one of eight apprentices not completing, and the qualified apprentices moving into roles in the NHS and one into a care home.
