Case Study: Kettering General Hospital NHS Trust improves staff engagement with NHS Employers

A NHS Employers Case Study

Preview of the Kettering General Hospital NHS Trust Case Study

Improving staff engagement through the workforce development strategy

Kettering General Hospital NHS Trust worked with NHS Employers to tackle low staff engagement, high turnover and poor survey results across its three sites and 3,700-strong workforce. After falling into the lowest 20 per cent of national staff survey results, the trust needed a clearer approach to improving morale, communication and retention.

NHS Employers supported the trust’s workforce development strategy, leadership development programmes, wellbeing initiatives, recruitment campaigns and new communication tools, including a staff app and regular executive updates. The impact was strong: Kettering General Hospital was named NHS Employers’ most improved acute trust for staff engagement, with engagement rising from 3.55 in 2014 to 3.71 in 2015, and staff retention improving from 14.5 per cent to 11 per cent by July 2016.
