A NHS Employers Case Study
NHS Employers worked with Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, one of the largest acute trusts in England, to address low uptake of seasonal flu vaccinations among staff. In 2009, only 30% of eligible staff took up the vaccine, creating concerns about staff health, service capacity, and patient safety across the trust’s two main sites.
NHS Employers supported a more accessible, staff-led vaccination approach for the 2010/11 flu season, with occupational health training matrons, nurses, and night staff as volunteer vaccinators and offering jabs in work areas, at weekends, and on night shifts. A communications campaign using frontline staff reinforced the message, and the trust increased uptake from 29.6% to 69% among frontline staff, with the team even sourcing extra vaccine when demand surged.
