A NHS Employers Case Study
Health Education Yorkshire and the Humber worked with NHS Employers to address a projected shortage of support staff in healthcare science across Yorkshire and Humber. A workforce scoping exercise in 2012 identified growing needs in physiological sciences, physical sciences and engineering, and life sciences, along with the need for suitable training pathways for bands two to four staff.
NHS Employers supported the development of a healthcare science apprentice training scheme using apprenticeship frameworks, values-based recruitment, and regional education providers. The pilot has been successful, with 27 apprentices starting in 2013, 22 recruited in 2014, and 25 due in 2015; 11 trusts are now involved, early completers have secured posts and progressed to higher levels, and the scheme has improved retention, employability and service efficiency.
