A NHS Employers Case Study
The customer, Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, faced a challenge of poor staff survey results, deteriorating patient satisfaction, and financial pressures. The trust needed to shift its organizational culture from a focus on efficiency and finance to one where quality, safety, and efficiency are paramount. To address this, the trust engaged with vendor NHS Employers and utilized its organizational development (OD) services to drive this cultural change.
NHS Employers helped implement a solution centered on embedding a values and behaviors framework and utilizing Appreciative Inquiry as both a tool and a mindset. This approach helped the trust reframe conversations to build on existing good practices and co-create change with its staff. The results achieved were significant, showing a steady year-on-year improvement in staff survey results and organizational culture. Measurable impacts included the trust winning the Dr Foster 2013 London Trust of the Year award, being the best performing NHS trust for infection prevention, and having 90% of cancer patients rate their treatment as excellent or very good.
