A NHS Employers Case Study
Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust faced a challenge with employee relations, where grievance and disciplinary cases were taking too long to resolve, resulting in numerous appeals and disagreements with trade unions. Their HR department was overstretched, and managers lacked the confidence and skills to handle these situations effectively. NHS Employers helped the Trust address this issue by developing a targeted program.
NHS Employers implemented the "Passport to Management," a two-day development programme created in partnership with staff and management. This highly interactive workshop equipped managers with leadership skills, knowledge of roles and responsibilities, and practical training through techniques like forum theatre. The results were significant: the Trust saw improved case outcomes with reduced resolution times and less dissatisfaction from trade unions. Managers reported feeling more empowered and confident. The programme's success led to increased capacity, with 47 staff trained and over 200 booked on courses.
