A NHS Employers Case Study

Preview of the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Case Study

Engaging staff to drive quality improvement

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, one of the UK's largest NHS trusts, sought to build a high-engagement culture to drive continuous quality improvement and deliver on its strategic aims. The trust partnered with NHS Employers to empower its staff, who are best placed to identify and make necessary improvements, through a comprehensive staff engagement initiative.

NHS Employers supported the implementation of the UK's first Microsystems Coaching Academy, developed with The Dartmouth Institute, to train frontline staff in quality improvement and coaching. The results were significant, with 195 coaches trained across eight cohorts leading to multiple service improvements. Measurable impacts included a reduction in surgical cancellations, the release of 400 nursing hours per month via a new digital tool, and improved staff engagement scores, all contributing to the trust's strategic objectives of outstanding patient care and a motivated workforce.
