City Hospitals Sunderland worked with NHS Employers to strengthen its support for the Armed Forces community, including reservists, veterans, service leavers and military families. The trust wanted to build a more active, visible employer offer for this group, while also helping local NHS teams understand the value that Armed Forces experience can bring to the workforce.

NHS Employers supported City Hospitals Sunderland in promoting reservist roles, creating Armed Forces communications and intranet resources, hosting events, and linking the trust with local military units and NHS networks. The trust implemented guaranteed interviews for eligible veterans, offered 10 days’ paid leave for reservist training, and shared its HR policy with other trusts; these actions helped the organisation achieve Gold recognition under the Employers Recognition Scheme and contributed to stronger recruitment, engagement and support for Armed Forces colleagues.
