A NHS Employers Case Study
East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust worked with NHS Employers to tackle a high level of new starter turnover. A deep dive into ESR-based turnover data showed that staff leaving within their first year accounted for 40.3% of overall turnover, prompting the trust to improve its onboarding experience from recruitment through probation.
NHS Employers supported the trust to implement values-based recruitment, refreshed job adverts and job descriptions, a new starter portal, a high-quality corporate “welcome day,” and a stronger local induction programme, alongside training for recruiting managers. The result was a reduction in first-year turnover from 40.3% to 22.1% by the end of 2016, an improvement of 18.2 percentage points.
