A NHS Employers Case Study
Dorset County Hospitals Foundation Trust worked with NHS Employers to boost staff flu vaccination uptake across a workforce of 3,000 people spread across hospitals, GP surgeries, schools, residential homes, and patients’ homes. The challenge was to raise the profile of the flu fighter campaign and engage busy staff in a way that would encourage participation.
NHS Employers supported an inventive flu week campaign built around an “I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!” theme, including bush tucker trials, unappealing sweets, real-time divisional uptake dashboards, peer-vaccinator prizes donated by local businesses, and a balanced flu team spanning communications, HR, infection control, peer vaccinators, and nursing leadership. The approach created more conversation and competition around flu vaccination and helped increase uptake, while giving managers clear accountability and visibility of progress.
