A NHS Employers Case Study
Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust worked with NHS Employers after significant financial misreporting left the trust facing a sizeable deficit and the need to restore balance, sustainability and staff confidence. The challenge was not only financial recovery, but also engaging 6,700 staff across three hospital sites in a transparent, constructive way while savings plans were developed and delivered.
NHS Employers supported the trust’s internal turnaround approach with a strong communications and engagement programme, including the “Get Well Soon” recovery brand, regular bulletins, workshops, staff champions, a Facebook group, surveys and an ideas forum. The result was a highly engaged workforce and measurable financial progress: by month six, the trust had achieved £4.5 million in savings against a £3.6 million target, outperforming plan by about £913,000.
