Devon County Council worked with NHS Employers to improve staff flu vaccination uptake across a large, dispersed workforce of more than 200 sites. The challenge was to create a campaign that was easy to implement, cost effective, and able to overcome low previous uptake and staff concerns about the vaccine’s effectiveness and side effects.

NHS Employers supported a staff-led flu fighter campaign that used survey insights to shape messaging, campaign champions on posters and postcards, internal newsletters, and a strong intranet presence with FAQs. Devon County Council also enabled staff to get vaccinated at local pharmacies and claim the cost back, improving convenience and tracking. The result was a rise in uptake from 10 vaccinations in 2013/14 to 122 in 2014/15, plus 180 survey responses, positive staff feedback, and a much higher campaign profile.
