A NHS Employers Case Study
The customer, Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, worked with the vendor, NHS Employers, alongside the University of Derby to address the challenge of effectively supporting newly qualified nurses and midwives in their transition from student to registered professional. The trust sought to evaluate and significantly improve its existing preceptorship programme to boost the confidence and competence of its new staff.
NHS Employers supported a project that introduced several key solutions, including Action Learning Sets for peer support and new Learning Environment Facilitator roles. The trust also implemented improved evaluation methods with pre- and post-programme questionnaires. Results showed that preceptees better understood their roles and highly valued the peer support and reflective practice. NHS Employers helped the trust develop a stronger, more effective programme that improved the learning environment for new staff.
