A NHS Employers Case Study
Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust worked with NHS Employers to address a growing shortage of registered nurses and limited development opportunities for band 2 and band 3 staff. The trust wanted a better way to structure its wards so it could use the skills already available more effectively and build a team around patient needs.
NHS Employers supported Chesterfield Royal in piloting a redesigned care delivery model that introduced trainee assistant practitioners and trainee nursing associates at band 3, progressing to band 4 on qualification. The solution was built through staff workshops, task analysis, and strong ward-level engagement, helping the trust overcome early resistance and create a more sustainable workforce pathway; it introduced 19 trainee assistant practitioners in 2016, 10 trainee nursing associates in 2017, and a further 19 nursing associate trainees from 120 applications in 2018.
