A NHS Employers Case Study
Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust wanted to improve staff health and wellbeing after its NHS Staff Survey highlighted low wellbeing scores, high work-related stress, poor awareness of benefits, and limited manager guidance. NHS Employers supported the trust as it began shaping a new employee health and wellbeing strategy and survey-led approach to understand staff needs across physical and mental wellbeing, lifestyle, and awareness of available support.
NHS Employers helped inform a practical, evidence-based programme that included a branded “Change and inspire” wellbeing initiative, resilience courses, physical activity sessions, expanded staff benefits, wellbeing events, and mental health training for managers. The first staff survey received almost 400 responses (32%), revealing issues such as long commutes, stress, low fruit and vegetable intake, and low benefit awareness; the resilience courses were popular and showed significant improvement in general health questionnaires, while events drove strong engagement with flu jabs, bike servicing, gym sign-ups, and wellbeing pledges.
