Cambridge University Hospitals Developing work opportunities for staff and community members

NHS Employers partnered with Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CUH) to address challenges around its ageing workforce and the need to expand its talent pool. The trust sought to increase access to employment and develop its current and future employees.

The solution implemented with NHS Employers involved creating a dedicated Work Opportunities Team to offer a wide range of apprenticeships, training, and work experience programmes. This was supported by a strong partnership with a local college and a learning agreement with trade unions. The results were highly successful, with 324 new apprentices employed and an estimated cost saving of £3.5 million. The trust also saw improved staff retention and was recognized as a top employer.
