A NHS Employers Case Study
Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust worked with NHS Employers to address high sickness absence and low manager confidence in managing attendance, alongside limited options to support staff health and wellbeing. The trust needed a more proactive, strategic approach to reduce absence while improving staff engagement and avoiding presenteeism.
NHS Employers supported the trust in building an employee health and wellbeing strategy, backed by board-level commitment, staff engagement, and best-practice evidence. The solution included Bradford Factor scoring, HR attendance advisors, manager training, occupational health enhancements such as fast-track physiotherapy, wellbeing portals, mental health first aiders, and fitness initiatives. Results included a drop in absence from 6.2% to 4.2%, reduced MSK sickness absence, strong staff survey outcomes, stable labour turnover at 9.7%, and increased use of wellbeing resources and training.
