A NHS Employers Case Study
Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Trust (BCHC) wanted to become an Armed Forces community friendly trust while better supporting reservists and ex-service staff across its 5,000-strong workforce. NHS Employers’ case study highlights the trust’s challenge of recognising the value of reservist skills, improving awareness, and putting the right policies and engagement in place.
With support from NHS Employers and SaBRE, BCHC appointed an Armed Forces community healthcare project manager, signed the Armed Forces Corporate Covenant, developed a Reserve Forces and Mobilisation Policy, and ran engagement events and awareness campaigns for staff. The result was stronger reservist support across the trust, recognition through the Ministry of Defence’s Employer Recognition Scheme Silver Award, and a continued push toward Gold, alongside clear benefits such as improved teamwork, leadership, clinical skills, and staff development.
