Birmingham Children's Hospital - Customer Case Study

Birmingham Children's Hospital NHS Trust sought to significantly improve its staff flu vaccination rates. They worked with NHS Employers, utilizing its flu fighter campaign resources and guidance, to build a more effective internal campaign structure.

The solution implemented by NHS Employers involved the hospital establishing a dedicated, multi-disciplinary flu planning team, supported by board leadership. A key annual recruitment was for a 'nurse flu lead', and the team was bolstered by senior medical consultants to champion the vaccine. This approach led to a dramatic increase in uptake, from 57.2% in 2012/13 to 86.2% in 2013/14, with doctor vaccination rates rising from 61% to 85%.
