A NHS Employers Case Study
Birmingham Children’s Hospital NHS Foundation Trust worked with NHS Employers to tackle high levels of work-related stress and improve staff wellbeing across its 3,500-strong workforce. The challenge was identified through staff survey results, safety surveys, listening sessions and direct staff feedback, with the aim of building a more resilient and happier workforce.
NHS Employers helped Birmingham Children’s Hospital implement a broad health and wellbeing programme, including five ways to wellbeing workshops, resilience and mindfulness training, speak-up support, manager development, counselling services and awareness campaigns. The results included a 6% drop in staff experiencing work-related stress, stress-related absence falling from 43% in 2012 to 34% in 2014, and improved staff engagement from 3.74 to 3.99, alongside a stronger culture of openness and support.
