Beyond boundaries alumni event sharing our inclusion journey

University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMBT) wanted to become a more effortlessly inclusive employer, but initially had limited direct engagement with its LGBT workforce and lacked the data needed to understand employee experience by sexual orientation. Working with NHS Employers, the trust set out to support its LGBT staff more actively and build an inclusive culture across its five-site, 5,000-strong workforce.

NHS Employers supported UHMBT in creating a staff-led LGBT network with executive sponsorship, developing LGBT workforce metrics, running a local LGBT employee survey, and improving policies, communications and training, including a new transgender policy. The trust became a Stonewall diversity champion, took part in a national pilot of sexual orientation metrics, and saw stronger staff engagement and confidence in inclusion, with feedback describing a positive culture change for both staff and patients.
