A NHS Employers Case Study
NHS Employers worked with Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust to strengthen staff health and wellbeing across a large, multi-site workforce of 6,500 employees. The trust needed a better way to communicate and engage staff, many of whom do not have regular computer access, while supporting healthier choices around activity, food, smoking cessation, and overall wellbeing.
Using a workplace health and wellbeing strategy supported by the Healthy Workplace Wellbeing Charter and SEQOHS accreditation, NHS Employers helped the trust roll out initiatives including fitness classes, health checks, healthy food options, stop-smoking support, and creative communications through noticeboards, newsletters, leaflets, and pop-up events. The programme helped the trust achieve an award achievement rating in 2015 and an excellence rating the following year, while also increasing participation over time and supporting a reduced, more sustainable engagement model through peer advocacy and varied scheduling.
