A NHS Employers Case Study
Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust worked with NHS Employers to address low staff and patient satisfaction, recruitment pressures, rising costs, and the need to improve care quality and organisational culture. The trust wanted to move away from a top-down model and build a more empowered, distributed approach to quality improvement across its 3,800 staff.
NHS Employers supported the trust’s #rightculture and Be the Change programmes, which enabled staff at all levels to submit ideas, launch local improvement projects, and receive QI training and coaching. The initiative delivered more than 40 projects in the first campaign and over 80 projects in 2016, while staff survey results improved significantly: the trust moved from below average to the top 25% in England, with gains in recommending the trust as a place to work and be treated, and 77 of 88 survey questions improving year on year.
