Aintree University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust worked with NHS Employers to address rota gaps created by the loss of junior doctor training posts and ongoing difficulty recruiting trust doctors. The trust needed a sustainable way to maintain safe patient care, support trainee rotas, and reduce reliance on locums and short-term backfill.
NHS Employers supported Aintree in introducing four physician associates through a sponsored training-and-placement model, with rotational posts across AMU and SAU, structured induction, and consultant-led recruitment and supervision. The result was improved rota cover, reduced locum spend, better continuity of care, and positive staff feedback, with one PA winning employee of the month for their impact.
