A NHS Employers Case Study
The Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust faced a challenge in accurately recording its highly diverse healthcare science workforce. Its previous system, the T matrix within the Electronic Staff Record (ESR), provided limited data. To overcome this, the trust worked with NHS Employers to implement an expanded U matrix on the ESR, aiming to capture precise and representative data on job roles in line with new national guidance.
NHS Employers' solution involved a collaborative process between HR and healthcare science leads to develop clear coding criteria for the new U matrix. This included regional engagement to define roles and using pay scale criteria to classify specialist staff. As a result, the trust achieved high-quality, standardized workforce data for the first time, making future workforce planning significantly easier. NHS Employers documented and shared this approach to help other organizations.
